Behavior Management

Having good classroom management is a key tool in being a successful teacher. I pride myself on my capability of creating and maintaining an effective environment for student learning that engages all students and establishes a climate that promotes fairness and respect. My classroom is a safe place that provides my students with power, love, fun, responsibility, and freedom. Setting classroom expectations, procedures, and routines begins on the first day of school and continues throughout the year.

Clip System

To track student behavior I use a clip system where students can move up or down throughout the day depending on behavior.

Green- The "Ready to Learn Zone" Students start the day on green when they come to school ready to learn (present, completed homework, necessary materials).

Blue-"Awesome" When students are on task and setting a great example for others. Students on blue may collect blue cards to earn prizes/rewards.

Purple- "Super Star" When students go above and beyond what is expected from them they then move up to "Super Star" status. Students on purple may collect purple cards to earn prizes/rewards.

Yellow- "Slow Down!" After repeated warnings students may need to take a time away from the activity to think about their behavior.

Red-"Stop" If a student is still displaying undesirable behavior after they have been removed from the activity they are placed on red, lose all privileges for the day and parents are contacted. When on red, students will sit in the designated "thinking" area to think about their actions. Physical behavior such as hitting will automatically move your clip to red.

Preventing Misbehavior

  • Caught Ya Tickets- tickets are given out to students who demonstrate appropriate behavior and manners. They put their name on the back and drop it in our chance jar. Every Friday some tickets are pulled for a reward.
  • Team Points- table points will be given to the teams that stay on task or demonstrate proper behavior as a team. On Fridays the points are counted and the winning team gets the trophy at their table.
  • Thermometer-Class earns red pieces to fill up our thermometer. When we fill it up, they earn their chosen reward.
Responding to Misbehavior

  • Picture Cards-Visual cards that reinforce the desired behavior. The cards display a picture and wording for the appropriate behavior that is requested.
  • Thinking Area-When students have reached red on their behavior clip, they will sit in the designated "thinking area" to think about their actions and what changes need to be made.

  • Behavior Sheet-Students fill out a behavior think sheet telling what rule they broke and what they should have done. The paper goes home to the family to sign and return the next day.
